Dizi 笛子

The Dizi 笛子 is the Chinese Bamboo Flute with a long history of over 2,000 years in China. It is a major traditional Chinese “woodwind” instrument commonly heard in many genres of music - including virtuosic solo repertoire, Chinese operas, orchestras, small and large ensembles, and traditional folk music. The dizi contains six holes for the fingers and one blow hole. The dizi produces a distinct, clear and resonant sound. One unique aspect of the dizi is its use of ‘paste membrane’ that’s applied to the second hole of the instrument - giving it its unique “buzzing” timbre. In many traditional Chinese repertoire and operas, the dizi symbolizes soaring and flying birds, and is able to distinctively imitate their sound effects.
